Pew Forum on Mormons

The Pew Forum released an interesting study on Latter-day Saints. The Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life delivers nonpartisan, timely information on issues and debates related to religion, news, politics, and international and public affairs. They interviewed 1019 Mormons in the United States (346 from Utah). Following is the infographic outlining the bulk of the results, however the most interesting results were not in the infographic. Here is what I gleaned from the full report:

Mormon college graduates are more likely to:

  • have temple recommends
  • have served missions
  • have “believe whole-heartedly” the tenets of Mormonism
  • pay tithing
  • see believing Joseph Smith saw God, helping the poor and not drinking coffee or tea as essential for being a good Mormon
  • say being a good parent and having a successful marriage are the most important thing in life
  • have families with stay-at-home wives
  • be conservative
  • support limited government
  • view homosexuality as being discouraged by society
  • believe polygamy, premarital sex, and abortion are morally wrong
  • be committed to their religion

The moral of this story? If you want to be or want your children to be faithful Latter-day Saints, receiving a  college degree will provide Mormons the greater statistical likelihood to fall into the categories listed above.
